Special Needs Support Group

Do you have a few hours to spend helping us develop virtual programs for first-time mothers and their babies? Friends of NYC NFP is developing and leading virtual LEAP (Learn, Eat, and Play) programs to do just that.

We are looking for volunteers who can help us with:
• Showing mothers the importance of interactions with baby
• Discussing raising special needs babies
• Showing support and offering resources
• Utilize early intervention knowledge to help develop programs for moms and babies
This opportunity is perfect for students in graduate programs needing experience in group facilitation (i.e., social work, public health, or other clinical fields)

Type of help: Description: As a volunteer you can help us create impactful and rewarding programs that encourage community, bolster moms’ confidence, and help parents develop skills. Volunteers also help contribute to a mom’s well-being, ultimately resulting in healthy families and healthy babies! At Friends, we believe we can improve the world for mothers and children, helping two generations at a time. We do that by strengthening New York City Nurse-Family Partnership (NYC NFP), through financial support that expands services and programming for new mothers and nurses. The NYC NFP operates the nationally acclaimed nurse home visiting model across the 5 boroughs that empowers first-time mothers to become the best mothers they can be. The core program is supported by government grants, but additional resources are needed. We work side by side with the NYC NFP staff to bring extra assistance to moms in their program. The Learn, Eat, and Play (LEAP) program connects NYC NFP moms with one another to learn, socialize, let their babies play, and engage in interesting talks focused on maternal and child wellbeing. Virtual LEAP sessions are regularly offered biweekly and are led or co-led by Friends staff, community members, or consultants. In 2023, we plan to reintroduce in-person programming. Our most popular sessions are: baby sign language, prenatal yoga, sound healing/minority mental health, mommy & me 30 minute meals.
Languages spoken: ENGLISH
What else ...: Note: Virtual events are held daytimes and typically are 45 minutes to 1 hour long. Typically sessions are hosted between 12-7pm EST.
