Snake River Boat Ramp Kiosk Attendant

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking a dedicated volunteer or volunteers to staff a river kiosk the West Table Boat Ramp on the Snake River.

The Upper Snake River is known worldwide for its crystal clear waters, unique geology, numerous recreation adventures, and amazing varieties of wildlife. The ability to experience wild water, world-class fishing, great hiking, and memorable camping are just a few of the reasons we all visit the Snake River Canyon. The privilege of use carries the responsibility to help care for this unique watershed.

Each summer from the June to August, the portion of the Snake River between South Park Bridge and Sheep Gulch hosts over 150,000 visitors. This is an extremely crowded and sought after section of the Snake River due to the great variety in boating challenges, fishing opportunities and beautiful scenery.

The West Table Boat Ramp, where the kiosk is located is the most popular boat launch for the whitewater section of the snake river.

Type of help: Major Duties: A kiosk attendant will spend most of their time at the main informational kiosk on the Snake River. This volunteer provides information to the public about current river conditions, checks in permitted groups and keeps an eye on facility conditions. They encourage responsible recreation and behavior at the ramps, and sometimes tour the canyon in forest service vehicles to check other facilities and boat ramps. Other duties include selling interpretive materials, assisting the public with travel questions related to the Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF), light maintenance work, and communicating information about the river, recreationists, river conditions and concerns to a forest service point of contact or supervisor as appropriate.

What else ...: Skills and Qualifications Needed: A good river kiosk employee is comfortable approaching and speaking with the public, personable and friendly. Strong communication skills are key. This is not a job where volunteers are enforcing anything, just providing information to the public. They should enjoy spending their days outside and in all types of Wyoming weather. The volunteer should expect to represent the US Forest Service - as a volunteer - being a liaison to the agency in an upstanding way.

Wish List: Job Duties: · Staff the river kiosk on days that it needs coverage - typically Monday-Wednesday. · Provide the public with general information about the BTNF, daily river conditions, and rules and regulations as applicable. · Provide the public with assistance when possible. · Sell interpretive products using provided iPhone point of sale device. · Check in non-commercial permitted groups. · Ensure people are abiding by the rules and providing education when they are not. · Occasionally improving signage and communicating area-specific needs and issues to a Forest Service supervisor. · Keep daily records of user contacts, work completed, and hours worked. · Work independently to perform job duties. · Occasionally perform light maintenance work where appropriate. · Removing litter from boat ramp areas. · Provide the public with on-the-ground information and handouts · Keeping an eye on trail conditions and report problems to program supervisor. · Identifying and helping manage invasive species · Occasionally cleaning restrooms (less than once a week) · Demonstrate a courteous, customer service attuite with visitors and colleagues. · Follow U.S. Forest Service procedures and policies. · Follow US Forest Service social media policy. · As an agency representative, support and explain agency policy and objectives · Wear the provided identifying uniform · Incumbent will carry, at a minimum, a radio, bear spray, maps and a cell phone. · Operate a government motor vehicle safely · Provide supervisors with recommendations for improving the operation as necessary.
