Tutor in-person with Adult Literacy program! - They need hope & reading skills!

The Anixter Center is seeking volunteer tutors for our adult literacy program! Volunteers would be expected to complete approximately fourteen hours of online training on being a literacy tutor and working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Once training is complete we ask that volunteers commit to one hour a week of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of three months but we would of course prefer that they stick around longer! We currently have in person (socially distanced, wearing a mask, outdoors when feasible) options or virtual options depending on the learner’s access to and ability to use the internet.

Type of help: Description: Anixter Center provides an array of services for individuals with disabilities and related challenges to live, learn, work and play in the community. Anixter Center is one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the Chicago area serving people of all ages with disabilities and related challenges. Each year Anixter Center and its division-Chicago Hearing Society (CHS)-help more than 8,000 children, teens and adults by providing residential, educational, employment, socialization and health services. What makes us truly unique are the array of services we offer plus our ability to help people at every stage of life-children, teens, young adults and older adults. Our clients span the age spectrum, from birth to 90+, and represent all walks of life. Most have a least one disability and many have more than one. While we serve people of all income levels, most of our clients have incomes significantly below the poverty level. As the parent organization, Anixter Center itself provides a broad range of programs for those who have physical, developmental, cognitive, psychiatric or sensory disabilities. These Anixter Center programs include: a literacy program for adults with disabilities; 24-hour supervised residential homes; substance use disorder programs for those who are deaf; and employment programs to help people with disabilities find jobs. with disabilities find jobs.
